How can I improve the tone of my voice?

Most of what people call a bad tone is one of two things. A breathy tone means the vocal folds are not closing fully and air is escaping. A pressed, tight tone means they are squeezing too hard, usually helped by a tense jaw, tongue or neck. Good tone sits between the two: clean contact without force. Gentle onsets, humming and sliding up from a light vocal fry teach the folds to meet without squeezing. The shape of the vowel does the rest: an open throat, a loose jaw and a tongue resting forward give the sound room to ring. Holding long, steady notes at a moderate volume, and listening back to a recording, is the most direct way to hear the change.
