IPA Vowels for Singers — Free Ear Quiz, No Sign-Up
Press play, hear a vowel, and pick its symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet: [i], [e], [a], [o] or [u]. These are the five pure vowels of Italian, the language lyric diction courses start from, so each answer comes with an Italian word and an English one that carries the same sound, such as [i] in mi and see. Five questions, about a minute, in the browser on a phone or a laptop, with no account and no microphone. The recordings are of one speaker, so the only difference you hear between two of them is the vowel. This is a trial: if singers use it, the next sets are the open and closed pairs that trip people up, [e] against [ɛ] and [o] against [ɔ], then German and French vowels and the consonants.
